Super 8: ET is back, and he's really angry!
After going to the theater last night and rushing into the theater for one of the most anticipated films of the past 5 years. Super 8 is not only a huge chuck of nostalgia for anyone who grew up in the 90s, but also a refreshing piece of cinema that theaters worldwide have desperately needed. I loved the dark tones the film took, and I also enjoyed the fact that it earned it's PG-13 rating, and was possibly two obscenities away from gaining an R rating. It's a film for a generation that worshipped Raiders of The Lost Ark.
I have always been a huge Spielberg fan but never a fan of J.J. Abrams, until I saw this fine film. It is an intelligent combination of Jaws and E.T. which to anyone who loves either of those movies, is a great combination. My only problem with the film, is I feel it would have been better off having had Spielberg direct instead of Produce, since the film is practically a mirror of his own. It is clear that Spielberg is teaching Abrams everything he knows, and using him to keep his style and legacy alive well after he is gone.
I can't complain there, because I have often worried about what might happen to cinema after a giant like Spielberg is gone. Now, it seems, that Abrams will keep this style alive and hopefully he doesn't stray far from this successful formula of filmmaking.
I would like to see Abrams direct something original without any guidance at all. No source material, no expert producer showing him the ropes, just his own skill and storytelling abilities.
Overall, Super 8 is super satisfying and a must see for any fans of the Sc-Fi genre.
